Front Hall

Charlie looks comfy in the new space at the front hall.

I saw this picture a long while ago and knew this is what I wanted for my front hall.

The problem was I had a small front hall ... with a closet .... bi-fold doors ... and a wall with a door.

No problem, right?

Just take out that pesky wall and door.  And get an electrician in to move the switches.

  
And while we're at it ... let's change the colour scheme and paint the back of the stairs white.

Did I mention that there was some drywall repairs needed? 

 

Grandad had been constructing cabinets in his garage while we were deconstructing our front hall.

You see it coming together now, yes?

The perfect hooks.

Once the final touches are done I'll post one last picture.

StarWars Marathon

All the food was delicious and on theme.

 

And the decorations were on point.

 

And we had a break mid-way to play a rousing game of Star Wars Jeopardy.

"I'll have, 'What is Creatures?' for 'What is $200?" ... right Jer?

A's Room

Voila! A's room is done.

New paint. New bedspread, curtains and rug.

Upcoming Update

When the boys decided it was time for separate rooms A moved across the hall to the spare room. 

Unfortunately, this room's a bit of a snore. So I'm making changes and hoping the end result will reflect it's new inhabitant. 

I found this small shield while cleaning his closet. 

So using a ruler and some Sharpies I recreated it (twice as big) onto his cork board. 

(Except this time he wanted a turtle shell in the middle.)

Backyard Work

We had a problem area in our backyard.
It's not just that the 'too small' shed was 40 years old and housing an extended squirrel family ...
... the area around it was unwelcoming and in need of update.

Voila! An awesome new, bigger, shed tucked in the back corner of the yard.

(In the spirit of 'reduce, reuse, recycle' two of the walls are made from the old shed - after resizing, sanding and painting,of course.)

And after a thorough sanding, the floor boards were reused to update the tree fort deck.

To make the yard a little more welcoming ... a deck.

 

And finally, our garden.
Sharp eyes noticed a neighbour had taken apart an old cedar deck and left the wood out for garbage.
Lucky for us, that meant 12 foot lengths of wood in good condition.
So excited to get some stuff planted in here next Spring.

The backyard has undergone quite a transformation this summer. 

Now I just need to get some sod laid and it will be done!

And the other 2/3 of the yard is jumping for joy that it doesn't have a 'bad side' now.

You know when you get a picture in your mind?

This guy has been reading a book series in which the main character wears a cloak.

A very specific cloak as it turns out .... one that could not be purchased.

After a quick trip to the fabric store I got to work based on the drawings he made me.

A little help from a website (see here) for guidance and ..... Voila!

He loves it.

   

In our backyard stood a shed. An old, run down, squirrel inhabited shed.

And it had to go.

 

We intended to make use of as much of the old materials as was possible so we took it apart layer by layer.
Sorting out the 'yuck' from the 'useful'.

Moving the shed location back to the corner where the old tree used to be opened up the yard.

It turned out better than we ever hoped.

As the boys get older they find themselves at the 'older' end of the age group for some activities.

This Friday we participated in an outdoors fun day and both were able to take on a bit of a leadership role with their younger group members.

So Grandad taught M and K. Then they taught E and A.

 

Eventually that trickled down to teaching me.

And now we all know how to shingle a roof.

Shed Build Day#2

As soon as it was reasonable this morning they were back in the yard and back at work.

It seems here they are taking a moment to plan their next step.

Grandad let me use his saw to cut one of the wall boards.

So much was accomplished this weekend. 

The shed is really taking shape and we love the way it looks and fits into the yard.

We'll keep at it when time permits ... when we're not at baseball of course!
